Virginia Beach is a resort city located at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Hundreds of hotels, motels, restaurants, and other tourist attractions line the miles of oceanfront property. Virginia Beach was credited by the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest pleasure beach in the world. Competitions such as the East Coast Surfing Championships and the North American Sand Soccer Championship are hosted in Virginia Beach annually.
Virginia Beach is the largest populated city in Virginia, even though it is mainly a suburban town. However, the city still manages to have over 200 city parks. Mount Trashmore Park is the highest point in Virginia Beach and includes two lakes, Lake Trashmore and Lake Windsor. Established in 1938 and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge protects 8,000 acres of freshwater and barrier islands on the coast of Virginia Beach.
Cape Henry, located on the northeast corner of Virginia Beach, is known as The First Landing where Captain Christopher Newport and his crew first landed in “The New World.” The Cape Henry Memorial stands to commemorate the Europeans who settled Jamestown. Nearby stands the Cape Henry Lighthouse, the first lighthouse authorized by the United States government.
